DO UNTO OTHERS

Luke 6:31: "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

For many years, usually sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, my coon hunting partner and I would take all of our coon hides out of the freezer and brush them out. Then we would drive from one hide buyer to the next, seeking top dollar for our furs. The buyers would usually sort them by size and fur quality and offer prices to match. One year when furs were at their highest, we went to see a local buyer named Bill Pease. He did his usual haggling and we played hard to get. When we would say we were leaving, he would tell us to just wait a minute. He would then get his paper and pencil out again and come back with a higher number. We left all our pelts with him that year and he gave us $62.25 per hide, for every one of them. That was the most we ever got for our coon hides.

I look back on those fur selling days fondly. It seemed that most of the time, all the fur buyers would tell you why your furs weren't quite good enough or why the fur market was softening. They would make any excuse to offer less, but before they would let you walk out the door, they'd increase their offer.

Leviticus 19:35-36: "You shall not falsify measures of length, weight, or capacity. You shall have honest scales and honest weights... I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt".

The scriptures tell us about trading fairly, about not using bad measuring weights or putting our thumb on the scale. We should never cheat. Instead we should follow what Jesus said in Luke 6:31.

Luke 6:31: "Do to others as you would have them do to you".
