HE USES THE ORDINARY FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY
1 Samuel 17 48-50
As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. 50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
Deer hunting has changed over the last 20 or so years. I remember when any buck, no matter it's size, was a true trophy and if you were blessed enough to take a buck it was an extraordinary season. Today so many have started hunting for a buck with a high score, instead of hunting for fun. To many it has begun to take some of the fun and excitement out of deer hunting.
For 30 years I've been involved with hunts with special needs individuals and purple heart vets. Especially with the kids, we've found that the size of the trophy doesn't matter. A small deer can bring as much joy as a huge buck. Often the experience far outweighs the score.
Often God will use something small to get the job done instead of something big. And He has used the things that men would look at as foolish to show His power and wisdom.
1 Corinthians 1:27
but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,
God used David, a young shepherd boy to defeat a giant, when there were many great military men right there that were afraid to step up. He used a small stone instead or a spear or sword. When Jesus chose His disciples to be the first evangelists, He didn't chose the spiritual leaders of the day.... No his first choice was the fisherman of the area. When God chose who He would first tell of Jesus' birth He again chose the shepherds. Over and over again God chose what we would consider something of lesser value to get His job done.
When we start to believe that God can use us how we are and where we are... we realize that HE has us where we are and how we are for a reason. Small, unimportant, seemingly ordinary things can be used in extraordinary ways. David was just a young boy compared to the Giant Champion from Gath, yet God used David in an awesome way. Not only was he small compared to Goliath, but all he used was a small stone and a seemingly small weapon to fulfill the will of God.
Don't fear what God is calling you to, because you feel inadequate. He has a plan for you and if He has called you to do something, He will prepare you for His service and you can move forward with confidence.
Don't shy away from what God is calling you to do.... Run forward toward the "battle lines" without fear. Remember, God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
