THE FIRM FOUNDATION
Luke 6:47-48
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built
It had been a miserably wet fall. Every couple day the rains would come down and the ground was saturated. There are fields that are too soft to get into to harvest the crops, and many roads that had become too muddy to pass.
At one point we built a bridge across a creek that had become too swollen to drive through. The very first time we intended to drive our side by side across the bridge the foundation on the south end failed and the bridge collapsed in a twisted mess. I was half way across when it went down and when the weak foundation went down, so did I. It was a mess
Many of us have heard the parable of the man building his house on the rock as well as the man who built his house on the sand. Or you heard the song about the wise man and foolish man building their houses. We can often focus on the foundation of the man whose house was built on the rock. He obeys the words of Jesus and his house stays up. We often tend to ignore that this man also goes through the storm. Both of these men go through the same storm, but there is a different outcome for each man. The only difference is their foundation. The foolish man built his house on something that moved and was not sound... and it cost him dearly.
We can learn a little bit of truth from this story. We learn that the Christian life isn't about escaping the storms that come our way. The Christian life is about weathering the storms with Jesus as our foundation. Jesus never said that the man who loves Him and His words won't have any problems in life. He says that the man who does what He's said will be able to make it through these problems, these storms because he has Jesus as his foundation.
Gordon B. Hinckley wrote,
"You can't build a great building on a weak foundation. You must have a solid foundation if you're going to have a strong superstructure.. So, to become all that God wants you to be, you must build upon all He has given you.
What is your foundation built on? Will it withstand the storms of life? Build your foundation on the Rock.
1 Peter 2:6
For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."
