THE RIGHT GUIDE
1 Corinthians 8:6
6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
A friend was telling me yesterday about a hunt that he took many years ago for a Canadian black bear. He said that it had been a good hunt and he took a quality trophy bear. The problem with the hunt didn't arise until three years later. Keep in mind that the hunt took place in Ontario Canada and my friend Mike lives in Western Florida, separated by about 1,600 miles.
Three years after the hunt Mike heard a knock on the door. When he opened the door, a federal fish and game officer was standing there. The officer explained that he was there to talk to him about the Canadian bear hunt from 3 years earlier. What he explained was, that without Mike knowing it, the outfitter had guided him on land that he was not licensed to guide on.
The fish and game department wanted to use Mike to convict the outfitter. They made life miserable for Mike and confiscated the bear mount. The great memories that Mike had carried for the last few years were now gone along with the trophy that he had paid for and cherished.
There is an important lesson to be learned from this story. We need to know who our guide is and where they are leading us.
Matthew 7:15-16a tells us to be careful of those that want to guide us in the wrong direction.
15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits."
It is similar to using a compass. A good and true compass will always point you to magnetic north. However I have had compasses that would vary and swing in different directions. The compasses had been sitting in a drawer (probably on top of a piece of steel or another magnetic object) and had lost their ability to point to what is true. A bad compass, like a guide a that is not true will bring us to the wrong places all the time, and like Mike's case, get us into trouble.
The true Guide can be counted on 100% of the time. There is never a reason not to follow Him and trust Him in anything. The false guides can never be trusted. They will never be looking out for your best interest, don't trust them. Our Lord will never lead you down the wrong path or into a place where you are not supposed to be. You can trust Him!
