What Will Last

By Joel Raygor

1 Peter 1:25
The word of the Lord remains forever.

It was the deer season opener and Ed had invited me to hunt with him on his farm, which was just a couple miles up a valley from the Mississippi river. After some serious scouting, I picked a spot on a bench with thick cover. A couple hours into the morning hunt, a buck appeared on the ridge just a few yards above me. When I pulled the trigger his legs folded and he rolled down the hill right to my feet.

Over the next decade Ed and I had more hunting adventures. Sadly, Ed was killed in a car accident and today those horns on my wall and some memories of hunts with him are all that remain.

When we harvest an animal, the meat is soon gone and the antlers just hang on the wall collecting dust. The real trophy isn't what's on the wall, but it's the memory of how we got it. Those forged friendships and lasting memories are the real treasures to cherish.

2 Corinthians 4:18  "So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Throughout life the hearts we touch and the smiles we bring to others are the things that others will remember long after we're gone. At the end of this life, the things with eternal value are the things that will last. Scripture teaches that physical and worldly things are temporary, but what is done for God, His Word, and unseen spiritual realities will last forever. Material possessions, worldly status, and physical life are fleeting, while love, faith, and obedience to God endure.

1 Corinthians 3:12–15  "Works built on the foundation of Jesus Christ (using gold, silver, and precious stones) endure the test of fire and receive a reward, while perishable works (wood, hay, straw) are burned up."

Only one life will soon be past.
Only what's done for Christ will last.
