A Good Recipe

Proverbs 3:13
"Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;"

I remember when I first began turkey hunting in the early 1980's, there was a focus on how good a hunter could work a turkey call.  I practiced non-stop for several years.  I loved working a diaphragm call and wheni felt I was good enough I became practicing with slates and boxes and eventually tube and wingbone calls.

Calling could easily cause a divorce in some households.  The continual yelps, putts, purrs and other calls can drive a non-turkey hunter insane.  After all the time I spent on trying to perfect every call and spending many months innthe turkey woods, I came to realize that calling was just a small fraction of what it takes refuge be a successful turkey hunter.

Recently a friend told me of a guy that asked for his secret to filling turkey tags. Well, here was  the recipe:  Start with 1 lb. of desire, add 8 oz. of woodsmanship, a tbsp. of persistence, a dash of calling, and a sprinkle of luck.

He said that his wife is an excellent cook. When he raves about a new dish she's prepared, she says, "it was a good recipe." Even though that might be true, she had to follow the good recipe for the food to turn out right.

Today many folks are following bad recipes in the pursuit of happiness, and they're ending up miserable instead of happy.  They try one recipe after another, but happiness continues to elude them. There are many scriptures that when followed will produce happiness. Here are just a few.

Psalm 1:1 "Blessed (or, Happy) is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly."

Psalm 128:1 "How happy is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways."

Psalm 37:4  "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Proverbs 16:20 "He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he."

The chances of putting together a recipe for true happiness without including a relationship with Jesus Christ is impossible.  We can strive for happiness, looking in all the wrong places for many years but until we turn our hearts towards God, we will always fall short.

Follow the right recipe.
