DELIGHTING OUR SENSES
2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
We'd been on the mountain for 9 days and we hadn't had any meat. We had assumed that one of us would take a mule deer and we would eat fresh venison... we assumed wrong. We had only eaten oatmeal, packets of tuna, oatmeal and some instant potatoes. To say we were hungry was a gross understatement.
After 9 days in the high we came down to the farm fields and low brush country, where we killed some bucks. But before we got those buck we were in desperate desire for anything filling and tasty. An elderly lady at the ranch gave us burger, buns and fixings and we had the best burger of our lives. It could have been rat meat... it didn't matter as long as it tasted good we didn't care what was in it.
When we were on the mountain we ate to survive. We didn't care much about taste or delighting our senses... we needed to survive. When we came down we didn't care about nutrition, we wanted to delight our senses and be happy.
This is a great example of what has happened to the spiritual appetite of many people today. Too many have left the biblical truths to follow the teachers that will make us feel good about ourselves... Or someone who gives us false hope. We want to feel good, not be convicted of our sins. We want our senses to be happy.
Today there are countless pastors of a big and small churches who are leading countless people down the wrong path. They tells the people all the things they wanna hear, but they aren't really true. They are appealing to their selfish desires because they doesn't care enough to tell them the hard truth that would actually help them. They're promising all sorts of earthly comfort, prosperity and happiness, but those are empty promises. They're feeding them empty calories... It might taste good but there is no value to the teachings. They are "scratching their itching ears."
We need to be careful in our world today that we measure every teaching against the Bible. We can't just can't listen to what sounds nice... We need to learn to eat to survive, spiritually as well as physically.
Guard your heart. Carefully discern the writings and teachings of those that are spiritual leaders today. If they are watering down the Bible or adding extra seasoning to make it more appealing... Run from it.
Matthew 7:15
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
We need to, again, learn to spiritually "eat to survive". Turn away from those that distort the truth of God's words. All the special sauces and seasonings can't hide the future bad taste of false teachings.
