Dependency
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
One day I watched an immature eagle attempt to catch a squirrel. The squirrel was staying just close enough to the trees, so if needed it could escape and use a tree as protection. That young eagle was going hungry.
When eagles have their young, they will tear food into small pieces and feed the eaglets directly. Around six weeks old the eaglets begin tearing their own food as they grow bigger, stronger and more skilled. After another month or two the young eagle leaves the nest. They remain in the general area and their parents still bring them food.
A few years ago I watched a young eagle in a a field along a very quiet back road. He stood in a field for several days. He was always within a few yards of the day before. A friend told me he brought him a fresh chicken from the store a layed it by him, but the young bird ignored it. I worried about him day after day, then another friend told me he saw a mature eagle bring him some food one day. I was relieved.
Sometime in the next 3 or 4 months the young eagles must become proficient at hunting for themselves. Often if unsuccessful, they will resort to finding roadkill, to supplement their needed food supply. If they don't learn and master their hunting skills in a short time, they will die.
Most humans we have removed ourselves from the hunting process and even the awareness of our dependency on it. We can just go to the grocery store or the restaurant any time we want, for our next meal.
As believers we can rely on God to supply our needs. The Phillipians 4:19 passage tells us just that. "But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
That verse says 'needs' not wants. We can trust that God will provide what is truly necessary, not every desire. God also might supply our needs through various means we didn't consider. He might provide a better job or maybe a learning opportunity that prepares us for a brighter tomorrow.
