Distractions
Colossians 3:2: "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
Selfishly, I grabbed the Savage 220 away from my brother-in-law Steve, opened the door of the blind, took the safety off, and squeezed the trigger. After the shot, I felt a little bad, because it ended our hunt and what we had set out to dom
He was a big coyote, but that morning, coyotes weren't our goal. Often I'd see the tracks in the snow and sometimes in the middle of the night they would howl outside our windows. We had set out to get a whitetail buck with a nice rack for the wall and meat for the freezer. But in the heat of the moment, I deviated from our plan. Sure, it was a big coyote, but I had messed up on something much better. The rest of that day was a bust and I felt bad that I had been distracted. Thankfully the next morning Steve did fill his tag and was rewarded for his patience.
This world is full of bells and whistles, things that sparkle, and coyotes. It is so easy to get distracted and forget what God's purpose is for our lives.
In Proverbs 4: 25-27 we read, "Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Make level paths for your feet, and all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil."
I've heard it say that "the enemy of great is good". This means that often we take our eyes and mind off of what God has planned for us and we settle for something that is good enough.
When we know God's calling, we should never settle for something that seems attractive. Even good things aren't what we're called to when God has great things planned for us. We need to be careful to not be distracted for the great things of God.
Colossians 3:1-4
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Lord, help us to keep our gaze fixed on you. Quiet the noise in our minds and clear away worldly distractions and mental clutter so we can hear Your voice, walk in Your purpose, and find perfect peace as our minds stay on You. In Jesus name we pray, Amen."
