Getting Caught With Our Defenses Down

1 Peter 5:8
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Just as the sun was going down on the last evening of hunting for the 2025 season, deer started pouring out of the valley below to feed.  I watch as 29 deer in total crossed within 20 yards of the stand I was in.  While 9 of those deer were bucks, none of them was the one I was looking for.

For the last 50 years I've hunted from elevated stands attached to trees.  I always did my best to place a stand in places where I would be well hidden from the game I pursued.  As often as I could I would cut a hole in cedar or other evergreen limbs so I was nearly invisible from below.   This year I gave up most of those stands and sat comfortably in box blinds with a Little Buddy heater running , at times when it was cold.

I've found that deer get very comfortable around a blind that is sitting in plain view, after it has been there a while.  They ignore it completely and they become oblivious to the danger that awaits very close to them.

In our own lives we often get so comfortable with the worldly influences around us that we fail to notice when attacks come.  Satan has a way of waiting until our attention is on something other than God to spring into action and knock us off our feet.

We need to be sure that our hearts are focused on God every minute.  We must be aware of our surroundings and the influences that we allow into our hearts and minds.  Like those deer that quit paying attention to the dangers that are close, we must not allow that to happen in our lives.

Be on guard at all times.  Don't allow the world to give us a false sense of security.  As Christians, we must always be on guard, because as 1st Peter 5:8 says, "the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour."

Don't allow him to deceive us and catch us off guard.
