IN NEED OF A HELPING HAND
1 John 3:17
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
Dan had one of the best deer stands on all of leases that I had. He rarely went a day without seeing numerous bucks. He had already passed on several good bucks by the 3rd day. Scott was on his first hunt with us. He was on his first hunt with us and by the third day he hadn't seen a good buck. He was home on leave from serving our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. He had never killed a big buck.
At the end of 3rd day, Dan came to me and said that he was going to head home, but only if I would put Scott in his stand. I agreed and the next day, by noon, Scott harvested the biggest buck of his life. Unfortunately, Scott passed away within a year and it was his last buck as well.
Scott was so excited that he dragged the buck ½ mile.. and it was in a place he could have driven to. Dan could have stayed and kept hunting that stand, but he realized that he had been blessed and he wanted to bless Scott as well.
We all have more "material possessions" than we need. We are blessed beyond most of the world. The poorest of Americans are rich by much of the world's standards. Yet we too should often sit on our hands when it comes to serving the less fortunate.
What are you doing about helping others? How about that young man or the little girl that has grown up without a Dad or a mom, can you sit with him or her once a week and teach them the Word of the Lord? What about the lady across the road that is too old to keep the outside or inside of her house in good condition, can you lend a hand – without expecting to be paid? As the Church we are called to love one another and one way that we do that is by helping others. When was the last time you put your love in action?
The words to a song by "Casting Crowns" tell a story of a girl in need of some to care... She's right in front of our churches.
"She is yearning
For shelter and affection
That she never found at home
She is searching
For a hero to ride in
To ride in and save the day
And in walks her prince charming
And he knows just what to say
Momentary lapse of reason
And she gives herself away
If judgement looms under every steeple
If lofty glances from lofty people
Can't see past her scarlet letter
And we never even met her"
It is great that we pray for people, we are called to do that, but we are also called to do more... Step up and step out to love those in need, and serve those around us.
Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
