IT IS FINISHED
John 19:28-30
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst!" 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
I just came off a week of fishing with my boys in NW Ontario at Rushing Wind camp. We had an amazing time together with new and old friends. The fishing was good and we put a limit of fish in the freezer. We kept fishing and released all the fish we caught.
I was looking forward to bringing Linda home several meals of walleye and we had enough to do a big batch of pickled northern pike.
When we left there was a little miscommunication and we came home with out any of our fish that the three of us caught, cleaned and packaged. After thinking that we had finished with limits of wonderful fish... we were so disappointed with having it all behind.
In John 19:30 Jesus just had two words left to speak, "It is finished". The Greek translation for these words speak to speak the finality of the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross.
The Greek word used, "tetelestai," can be translated as "it is finished," "it stands complete," or "it is paid in full".
In the fulfillment of prophecy it means... Jesus's statement signifies the completion of his earthly mission and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah's suffering and sacrifice.
On the payment for sin in means... The word "tetelestai" was also used to signify the completion of a debt. In this context, it suggests that Jesus's death on the cross paid the penalty for the sins of all humanity.
As a sign of victory it means... a declaration of victory, signifying Jesus's triumph over sin, death, and the power of evil.
In it's very perfect tense, in Greek emphasizes that the action is the completion of the mission is finished, but its effects are ongoing. They are never-ending, there is nothing else that needs to be done for the payment of the sins of the world.
As a Christian, Jesus's declaration "It is finished" signifies the completion of God's plan for salvation and the availability of forgiveness and eternal life through faith in Jesus.
If you already know Jesus Christ, not just knowing "of" Him, but your relationship is a father/son relationship with God, then what are striving for to continually paying for your sins? Why are you still listening to satan when he tells you that you aren't enough in Christ? Remember this verse and live it out every day.
John 8:36
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
If you've never confessed your sinful life to God and accepted the gift he offers, what is it you are waiting for? By doing this, you are set free from every guilt you've carried... and free from the payment of your sins, He has already paid your debt.
