RESTING ON YOUR LAURELS
1 Corinthians 15:58; "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, knowing that in the LORD your labor is not in vain."
A definition of resting on your laurels is being satisfied with past achievements and not trying to achieve more. It implies complacency and laziness in the face of previous success.
This reminds me of the Chicago Bulls in the Michael Jordan era. The Bulls were not content with winning just one championship. They went back-to-back-to-back and accomplished the famed, "Three-peat" two times. They proved that hard work and dedication to winning paid off in multiple championships. Successful teams do not live off what they accomplished in the past. They get back in the gym and work even harder to attain even greater success.
The same is for the Christian in their daily walk with Christ. Each day is a new opportunity to live and work for the advancement of God's Kingdom. We are told in 1 Corinthians 15:58; "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, knowing that in the LORD your labor is not in vain." Proverbs 14:23 tells us "In all toil, there is profit......"
Brothers and sisters, have you become complacent and lazy in your work for Christ? You have been called to service for your LORD and fellow man. Are you consistently and habitually "in the gym" working diligently to work out your salvation? Philippians 2:12 states that we are to "work out our salvation."
The Apostle Paul was not telling us that our salvation is attained by our works, but rather he is encouraging believers to actively pursue their spiritual growth and relationship with God. How are you doing in your bible study and prayer life?
Jesus does not want us standing on the sidelines or standing by the trophy case living off our past accomplishments. He wants us actively working for His Kingdom. Are you resting on your laurels?
