SNARES OF SIN
John 8:33
"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free."
My dad loved to trap. I enjoyed going with him in the last year's of his life. A couple of different times I got him and his friends jobs trapping predators for some game farms. The way they protected these properties is by setting snares in the holes where the predators had dug under the fences. It is a very productive way of removing unwanted and harmful critters.
He loved trapping so much that when his friend Jerry spoke his eulogy, there were a few stories of their trapping adventures. We laughed and we cried... It spoke to who he was.
A snare that is correctly set is a deadly tool. Until recent years a snare didn't have a safety stop on it. This stop keeps the snare from harming the wrong animals.
Back in the day when an animal was caught in a snare it would fight and pull and struggle until the snare tightened to the point that it killed the prey.
This is the symbol of 1 Timothy 6:9. "But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction."
This verse talks about the love of money, but it could be said about any sin or anything that we put ahead of the love of God. The more we struggle to hold onto that which is important to us and that which is taking the place of God in our lives. The more we find ourselves being strangled by the snare that we are caught in the more we fight, when we should surrender to God and allow Him to set us free.
Today's snares have that safety stop that I wrote about above. This stop allows an animal to give up on the struggle and the one that has the power to free it from the snare can do so.
We can do the same. Instead of fighting, clawing and struggling with our sin, we can summit to God's love and peace and allow Him to set us free. All we have to do is to give in to God, allow Him control of the situation and allow Him the control of our life.
What issues are you struggling with today? What snare is slowly tightening around you, slowly choking you. We never know when the snare will tighten to the place where it becomes fatal. Give it up to God. Allow Him to set you free from the snare of sin in your life.
