WRITE THEM ON YOUR HEART
Proverbs 7:1-3
Follow my advice, my son; always treasure my commands. Obey my commands and live. Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes. Tie them on your fingers as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.
Recently I was telling a friend how much I enjoy having taxidermy around the house and camp. I'm not interested in having the taxidermy of people other than family. Having mine and that of family and close friends is what I want. On the wall is the mount of my grandson's first buck. Next to that is the mount of my oldest son's first buck. In the dining room is the antler mount of youngest son's first. On the living room wall is Linda's first buck... And then out in the garage is my first buck. Over one of the beds is a mount of my dad's last mule deer buck he took before he died.
I can tell you the stories of each one in detail. Every place, every hunter in camp, every detail of the hunt is etched in my memory. I have logged every single deer our camps have harvested since 1969. All the stories are embedded in my memory and I can recite them like they all just happened yesterday.
More important than any of these memories and far more important than the stories from my youth are the commands and instructions from the Lord. He thinks that they are so important that He tells us to bind them on our fingers and write them on our hearts.
God desires that I hold His commands and instructions close and He desires just as much for us to spend more time in a close personal way with Him.
I really want to learn to sit at his feet and know Him better. What a story to tell my grandkids that will far outweigh my hunting tales. I want to better learn to truly worship Him. I want to better learn to talk to Him and I want to better absorb His word so that it penetrates my heart and creates change in my life.
These are the stories that will change lives. These are the things of His grace, that when they are told, will have eternal consequences. These are the trophies He desires.
The mounts on the walls are all well and good and they hold a special place in our lives, but will fade with time and in a generation or two they will be forgotten. The things of God will last for all time.
Write them on your heart.
