THE COMPANION OF FOOLS

Psalm 1:1-4

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.

It's been a really long fall. We love all of our hunters that come each fall, but by this time of the year we are ready for a break. The final group of hunters are our muzzleloaders that come each year. Most hunters have given up by now, but these guys show up with high hopes and a good positive attitude. They hunt hard and keep a good attitude right up until the end.

When I played high school football, there was a small guy by the name of Alan that was on the team. He was the smallest in stature, but had the most heart of anyone on the team.  Our coach once said, "I would rather have 22 players that have a heart and attitude like Alan's than 22 big guys with physical abilities". If I were putting together an athletic team to compete, I would pick the players that had the best attitudes — an attitude like Alan's.

Our walk with the Lord is the same.  If we surround ourselves with people who have bad attitudes or expect the least from us, we are bound to give the least. By associating with men and women with godly hearts and attitudes, we will be driven to have the same attitudes, which makes us stronger Christians and people.

This morning I read a small saying... "You can't hang out with negative people and expect to live a positive life." So true! God calls us to remain positive and hopeful in life. He tells us in John 16:33: "These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

Proverbs 13:20 gives us a contrast between the benefits and problems with spending time with the right and wrong people. The wise people of the world will remain positive, while the fools of the world will give up and go home:

"He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm."

Choose your companions wisely.
