You Can't Take It With You
1 Timothy 6:7
"For we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of it".
I remember as a kid when hunting properties would come up for sale around our camp of 40 acres. Each time my dad would say, "We should buy that property. We'll wait a while and see if the price goes down." Every time, the properties would sell before the price dropped. Every time this happened I wish we had bought it. My thought was that we could keep that property for many years for our own hunting.
Back then, land was selling for between $100–$200 per acre, and it probably would have been tough financially, but I wasn't bothered by the finances... I just wanted more land to hunt.
As I've gotten older and have dealt with cancer a couple of times, I now see things from a different perspective. I realize that I don't get to take anything with me when I leave this earth. I realize none of this stuff really is ours, but it all belongs to God — we're just temporary property managers.
1 Timothy 6:6-10 states, "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
These bible verses highlight the temporary nature of our material possessions, and it reminds us not to focus on acquiring wealth since we will be leaving it all behind. If we try to hold on to it too tightly, it causes far more issues.
Instead, we should just be content with what we have.
