DO NOT BE DECEIVED

1 Peter 5: 8 -12
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

In the springtime when the gobblers are lovesick, the fun is convincing them to forget their number one defense, their eyesight and to just trust their number two defense, their ears. Calling is part of the turkey hunting experience and much of the challenge. Usually, I try to match the sounds of the real hen, mimic everything she does, and try to put her same excitement into my calling. For me, there is nothing like teasing and coaxing that long beard into shooting distance.

Over the years I've worked on my calling. I've also learned the hard way that a bad setup can cost me a bird, but a well placed decoy can keep a gobbler's attention, just long enough for that fatal shot. Good camouflage,  setting in the shadows, and remaining motionless can all make the difference in taking the bird home.

There wasn't one magical moment where this all became clear, but instead it was after years of mess-ups and failures that I finally started throwing birds over my shoulder. Every season still has new lessons, but over the years I've learned that in the timber I need to be sneaky, deceptive, and deceitful. I need to be a deceiver, because the turkey is almost always on guard.

In much the same way we must be on guard for the evil one, the tempter, the deceiver, Satan. Every day he waits in the shadows for just the right moment to devour us.

2 Corinthians 11:14
No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Ephesians 6:11
Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
