HEAD ON A SWIVEL
1 Peter 5:8
"Be sober minded, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour"
It has been said that duck hunters are the "holiest" of all hunters. The reason being is they are always looking up. Ok, that's my best attempt at telling a joke. Any duck hunter knows that you must remain vigilant and aware of what's going on around you at all times. As you sit in the blind, you are always scanning the sky for flying birds. Your head must remain on a swivel. Birds may show up from any direction at any time. I must admit, that more than once, I have become distracted or may have "closed my eyes" for a short time and been caught off guard by birds that landed in the decoys before I even saw them.
Just as the duck hunter must remain vigilant, we must also keep watch out for our adversary: the devil. The bible states that the devil prowls around looking to catch someone unawares. He is looking for someone who has let their guard down and is vulnerable to attack. We must resist and fight the slings and arrows of the great deceiver. Our armor against our adversary the devil includes God's truth, His gift of righteousness, salvation, the peace of the gospel, the unshakable Word of God, and our faith in Christ. (Ephesians 6:14-17) Like vigilant soldiers, we must remain alert and armed with spiritual weapons. We are in a spiritual conflict with the adversary.
Don't let your guard down — arm yourself with those spiritual weapons and protect yourself with the armor provided to you by Almighty God. Remaining on guard and vigilant will help you resist the attacks of "the father of lies". (John 8:44)
