REMOVING THE DISTRACTIONS
Luke 8:5-8
The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky ate it up. 6 Other seed fell on rocky soil, and when it came up, it withered away because it had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. 8 And yet other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as much." As He said these things, He would call out, "The one who has ears to hear, let him hear."
It's fall and what is one of the most prevalent (besides big bucks) symbols we see everywhere this time of the year? Pumpkins. You see, pumpkin pies, pumpkin nut muffins, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin shakes... And PUMPKINS everywhere.
I used to grow a few of the Big Mac variety of pumpkins. These are the ones that grow to hundreds and hundreds of pounds.
To grow a pumpkin of that size and weight there are many things you have to do. The first thing you have to do is remove all other blossoms from the vines once your one chosen pumpkin gets started. The other blossoms and small pumpkins just drain your pumpkin from the energy it needs to attain it's full potential.
Our lives are like that Big Mac pumpkin... We can't hear God when your mind is crowded with worldly thoughts, worries, fears, and plans, or if you always have the radio or TV continually on. And if you constantly have your phone against your ear, when God calls all he gets is a busy signal!
All of these distractions are what Jesus was referring to in Luke 8 when he talked about the seed falling in the weeds. This verse says those weeds grew with the seed and strangled it. It's like the extra blossoms sucking the energy from the pumpkin.
Even when His seed has taken root in your life, if you don't allow him to feed you and help you reach your full potential, your wasting your life. Allow God to feed you, to reach you and to remove those things that suck the godly nourishment from your life.
When the other pretty blossoms spring up and draw away your time and energy away from God, cut them off, throw them away. If you leave those distractions there, you will never grow.
Keep our hearts aligned with His and He will give us all we need for a successful life.
